How do you approach goal-setting for the new year?
👉 Are you a "vision board" person? 👉 Maybe you set a huge list of intentions and goals? 👉 Or do you just kind of wing it and hope for the best?
For years, I was all about creating a giant, detailed plan. I’d sit down with a cup of coffee, grab a fancy notebook, and write out about 20 goals… (only to realize by March that I was already feeling overwhelmed and defeated).
Sound familiar?
Here’s what I’ve learned…
I finally ditched the “all-or-nothing” mindset and found something WAY more sustainable (and less stressful).
If you’ve ever found yourself feeling like this, take a deep breath. You're not alone. I’m here to share what’s been working for me – and hopefully, it’ll help you, too.
Let me walk you through what I’ve been doing lately…
✅ Reflect First
Before I even think about what’s next, I always start by looking back. I take a peek at my calendar (month by month, so I’m not missing anything!) and celebrate what went well.
You see, so often we get caught up in the next big thing, but looking back and giving ourselves credit for what we’ve accomplished is just as important.
Did you land a big client? Did you finally finish that project you’ve been putting off for months? Hell yes! Celebrate that!
✅ Learn From the “Failures”
Now, let’s talk about the things that didn’t go according to plan. And listen – don't panic. Instead of beating myself up, I now trust that everything that didn’t work out is guiding me somewhere better.
Maybe you launched a new product and the sales were underwhelming. Instead of wallowing in the disappointment, I look at it from a perspective of growth. What did I learn from this? What can I improve? And how can I apply these lessons moving forward?
✅ Gratitude (but Make It a Letter)
Okay, this one’s a little woo-woo, but stick with me. I write a letter to the Universe – yes, a letter! I date it for one year from now and express gratitude for everything I’m manifesting as if it’s already happened.
For example: "Thank you for the successful year, the growth of my business, the deep relationships with clients, and the financial abundance I’ve attracted."
Why do I do this? It shifts my mindset to a place of abundance and possibility, instead of scarcity and frustration. And it helps me feel like I'm already in alignment with my goals.
✅ Set Goals That Actually Feel Right
Once I’ve done all that, I’m ready to set my goals. But here’s the trick: instead of overloading myself, I focus on the things that really light me up.
No more setting goals because I "should" or because I saw someone else doing it. Instead, I choose things that feel aligned with where I want to go – and most importantly, what I WANT to do.
What makes you excited? What brings you joy? Let that be your compass.
✅ Baby Steps
Let’s get real here. I’m not trying to climb Everest in a day. I break my goals into quarters, and here’s the key: I write out the very first, super-doable action step.
That’s it. No overwhelming to-do lists, no unrealistic expectations. Just a single, small action that moves me closer to my goal. Maybe it’s sending one email, making one phone call, or writing one page of content.
This way, I’m building momentum without the paralyzing stress of doing it all at once.
✅ A Word About Your Environment
Here’s something we often overlook: the space we’re working in.
If your desk is cluttered, your calendar is a mess, or your digital files are in chaos, it’s going to weigh on you. I’ve found that taking just 30 minutes to clear my workspace, organize my week, or even create a calming ritual (like lighting a candle before I dive into work) makes a world of difference.
Your environment sets the tone for your mindset. Make sure it’s supporting your goals instead of stressing you out.
Your Word, Your Focus, Your Year
I always pick a word that guides me through the year. This year, it’s “flow.” I’m committed to trusting the process more, leaning into that feeling of ease, and letting go of trying to control every outcome.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re fighting the universe, trying to push everything into place, you know exactly what I mean. This year, I’m embracing flow. I’m releasing the tight grip and inviting more ease into my life.
